Il nuovo Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies Building a Chicago degli Architetti Krueck & Sexton somiglia ad un diamante incastonato nella parete dello storico Michigan Boulevard District, con gli edifici del diciannovesimo secolo di architetti come Louis Sullivan, Daniel Burnham e Holabird & Root.
Dieci piani, struttura di 13,500 metri quadrati, è diventato il primo museo “verde” di Chicago dopo aver conseguito il livello Argento della certificazione LEED da parte dell’US Green Building Council.

L’edificio, articolato e piegato nella sua la facciata in vetro, è l’espressione della luce, sia metaforica che reale, un aspetto fondamentale per le tradizioni religiose ed intellettuali ebree. Materiali e tecnologie moderne, scelti e utilizzati con rigore al fine di sostenere l’espressività dell’edificio, rivelano la dinamica e l’energia interna. L’espressione sfacciatamente scultoreo e trasparente dell’istituto dialoga attraverso il tempo con i capolavori presenti nella mappa architettonica di Chicago.


L’edificio funziona come un campus verticale, contiene le gallerie del museo, una biblioteca e gli archivi, un auditoriun multiuso da 440 posti, un college, una caffetteria e un negozio di souvenir, e gli uffici amministrativi.


Attraverso una serie di misure, tra cui l’illuminazione ad alto rendimento, e sulla base della domanda di ventilazione e recuperatore di calore, l’edificio raggiunge una riduzione del 29% nel consumo di energia, evitando di immettere nell’atmosfera oltre 300 tonnellate di CO2 all’anno. Gli infissi sono autopulenti, con conseguente risparmio d’acqua. La qualità dell’aria interna dell’edificio è garantita attraverso l’uso di materiali sani, controlli dell’umidità ed elevata efficienza nel filtraggio dell’aria. L’edificio dispone anche di un tetto “verde”, che riduce sia i costi di riscaldamento e raffreddamento.
